Southeast Asia has long been a paradise for intrepid travellers, offering the spectrum of luxe experiences to backpacker adventures. A number of cities remain as tourist magnets, including Bali, Hanoi, Bangkok, to name a few. We're not saying their popularity isn't justified – but with eleven countries in all of Southeast Asia, there's so much more that the region has to offer. Now that travel is booming again, pack your bags and sign up for a new experience at these alternative destinations.

Ninh Binh

Vietnam

Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh, Sapa – these are some names that get bandied about when discussing destinations in Vietnam. But don't overlook Ninh Binh, Vietnam's first capital and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Defined by towering limestone karsts, tranquil rivers, and mystical historical and religious sites, Ninh Binh is the perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure travellers keen to see another side of Vietnam, off the beaten path.

DO Soak in panoramic views of Ninh Binh, known as Halong Bay on Land, at Mua Caves. Get a good workout climbing up 500 steps then head to two viewpoints – the dragon and the pagoda – for some fantastic shots. Also visit the famous Bich Dong Pagoda, which has a gorgeous moss-covered gate and a bridge over a glassy pond of lotuses. Other than that, explore the wetlands at Van Long Nature Reserve or experience the karsts from the water on a Trang An paddleboat tour.

Lombok

Indonesia

Lombok is an Indonesian island just east of its more popular sister, Bali, and no less of a paradise on earth. Think beautiful sand beaches, lush forests, and magical waterfalls – without the throngs of tourists you can expect to find in Bali. Granted, Bali has a greater variety of accommodations and entertainment, but we'd argue that Lombok has more idyllic beaches and better surf – and you can always take a short boat trip to the nearby Gili islands for diving, partying and other pursuits. Since Lombok is a quieter island, it's the perfect spot for wellness getaways too, be it a yoga or meditation retreat where you can recharge in peace. And hey, we have direct flights via Scoot – convenient.

DO Take a hike up the majestic Mount Rinjani or catch waves at Senggigi Beach. Just want to relax? Head to the wide shores of Selong Belanak to kick back. To experience more of the island's culture, visit colourful Muslim mosques and shop for local produce and crafts at traditional markets like Cakranegara Market.

Luang Prabang

Laos

Luang Prabang was the seat of ancient royals and the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the mountainous region of northern Laos, Luang Prabang offers a tantalising mix of sleepy historic towns, century-old monasteries, ancient temple cave systems, and an abundance of natural hiking trails and water activities. The mighty Mekong River, glittering waterfalls and natural pools offer the opportunity for boating, swimming, and sight-seeing, while trails winding past Hmong and Khu villages are a chance for encounters with rice farmers and textile weavers.

DO Top of the bucket list is Kuang Si Falls, a fairytale waterfall that's about an hour's drive out of town. For more outdoor adventure, explore Mount Phousi or grab a kayak for a paddle where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet.  Closer to the city are over 30 temples (or wats), the most distinctive being Wat Xieng Thong, a gorgeous gilded temple from the 1500s built in typical Luang Prabang style. For a taste of bustling nightlife, dive into a night market at the heart of town, where you can buy jewellery, trinkets, and street food.

Rayong

Thailand

This vacation spot is popular with the locals, but hasn't quite made it on the map for foreign tourists. But Rayong province is worth visiting, both as a gateway to the nearby Koh Samet, and for the mainland itself. Koh Samet has pristine waters and inviting beaches – especially quieter ones on the west side – making it a perfect option for a beach getaway near Bangkok. Rayong itself has more diverse offerings like mangrove parks, old towns, and shrines, and stellar seafood.

DO Take a 45 minute boat ride for a few days on Koh Samet's standout beaches like Ao Phai and Ao Wai. On the mainland, mangroves beckon at Golden Meadow Mangroves – so-called because the canopy glows golden on sunny days. Authentic Thai experiences are also aplenty at Yomjinda Road's shrines, art galleries and cafés, and at the bustling Ban Phe market where you can try what many consider to be Thailand's best dried squid, shrimp, and fish.

Seberang Perai

Malaysia

Everyone knows and loves Penang – the island, that is. But not many have thought to explore Seberang Perai, Penang's underrated mainland. Its three sections – north, central, south – each have a different allure. Together, they offer an abundance of forest walks, quiet beaches, cultural attractions, and decent shopping. We also hear that the food in Seberang Perai is uniquely fusion, representing a mishmash of cultures you can find in the city.

DO The best way to immerse yourself in Seberang Perai is through an idyllic homestay experience at Kampung Agong, known as Penang's 'Bali'. If you're feeling active, head to Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest to hike its many trails and scale Seberang Perai's tallest point. Have a photo stop at the beautiful water pools of Frog Hill, and visit the small village of Bukit Tambun for stellar seafood and beautiful art murals in one.
