If you want to catch a glimpse of "Australian life", the finalists of this annual photographic prize are always a good place to start. They're literal snapshots of all sorts of people and scenarios from across the country, ranging from suburban scenes to our inner cities, and all the way out to the most remote areas in the country.
Some of our favourites this year include, Tamara Dean's 'Endangered', which features a group of underwater humans swimming like a school of fish; Jason Thomas's otherworldly 'Who Talks For My Country Now?'; and Nicholas Moir's confronting 'Death on the Darling', showing the devastation of drought.
They're all competing for the $50,000 grand prize, which has been on offer since 2007. There's a pretty wide remit as to how the photographers can work, but the key is that they show how they experience life in Australia. The 30 finalists are on exhibition at Paddington's Junpier Hall from May 4 to June 2.
