When you’re watching a movie at the cinema, do you ever think, ‘I wish there were more facial water jets spraying me with an unidentified liquid?' Well, someone did, because Event Cinemas is opening Sydney’s first four-dimensional cinema, complete with wind, rain, scents, vibration effects and ‘ticklers’ (ooh la la).

While it sounds a little like Willy Wonka’s terror-inducing boat ride, they’re claiming the well-equipped George Street theatre is the start of next-gen blockbuster movie-watching in Sydney. So I guess we’ll keep on rowing through the fog, bubbles, snow and lightning effects.

They’re calling the new-fangled cinema experience 4DX, and it’s also touted as the biggest theatre of its kind in Australia. You can call dibs on a motion chair starting today, and the first cab off the rank is sci-fi action thriller Venom, which is hitting the 4D screen on October 5. Expect more in-your-face action for future screenings of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Aquaman and Bumblebee.
