Sonoma may be a giant in the artisan bread game, but the bakers have maintained a high level of quality in their product. Sonoma’s first sourdough starter was smuggled back from Northern California, where co-founder Andrew Connole learnt how to bake, in the ’90s. The signature miche loaf is a good deal darker than the other sourdoughs on this list – you can tell it has spent time in a wood-fired oven from the deep coloured crust and its intoxicating, slightly smoky aroma.

We've been buying our bread from the Glebe cafe for two years now, and it's always been lovely. The bread is beautiful. However my husband has been copping attitude from the female manager now for a couple of months and he is at a loss as to why. Last week she slammed the order on the counter and walked away but this morning as he walked in two young baristas muttered "here he comes" and began sniggering. The manager then came out and repeated the same performance, bordering on openly hostile this time. My husband is utterly dumbfounded as to what he has supposed to have done to this woman but he felt very unwelcome and didn't take kindly being the butt of ridicule, so I'm angry enough to write this review. It's a shame as we love the product but the unprofessional behaviour has lost us.
