Yoga and mindfulness have become big business in Sydney, which is why the founder of Commune in Waterloo runs weekly sessions that are affordable and accessible for all. Sam Ali says he first got into yoga once he realised it didn’t require fancy gym gear or a slick studio by the beach, and Commune’s classes are paid for by donation in order to reach those struggling with depression, anxiety and PTSD – or “those who need it most”, says Ali. There are weekly classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in hatha, vinyasa and yin yoga. Professional instructors, Jessie-Anne Vandertak, Lizzy Brownie and David Coulibaly, teach all classes, which run through compassion, the art of slowing down and bringing awareness to the breath.
