Interdisciplinary collective Black Birds’ show Brown Skin Girl was one the highlights of last year’s excellent Batch Festival, exploring the experience of being black and brown in Australia in a way that never felt condescending or preachy. Now, the duo behind it – Māori Grenadian woman Ayeesha Ash and Tokelauan Fijian woman Emele Ugavule – is back, with a new show that promises to be equally thought provoking. Combining song, spoken word and dance, Exhale explores the relationships and boundaries formed between Indigenous cultures on foreign lands, and how storytelling can hold the key to healing.
