It’s official: Chicagoans know pizza.
Yelp has released the 2024 Top Pizza Spots rankings, according to the Yelp Elite Squad. Pequod’s Pizza, the beloved pie shop for locals, has secured the No. 1 spot for the best pizza in the country.
Before any heated debates begin, the Elite Squad knows what it's talking about—each verified reviewer has to go through a nomination process to join the coveted group.
Pequod’s Pizza has been a long time favorite for those in the Chicagoland area. Since opening its original Morton Grove location in 1971, Pequod’s has gained a loyal following for its unique take on the traditional deep dish pizza. The lauded pizzeria creates its unique crust by placing a ring of mozzarella around the rim of the deep dish pan, which caramelizes as the pizza cooks.
Yelp ranked businesses by considering total volume and number of five-star reviews that were written by Yelp Elite Squad members for restaurants in the “pizza” category.
Five other Chicago pizzerias made the Top 100 list: Piece Brewery and Pizzeria in Wicker Park came in at No. 17; Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company in Lincoln Park was ranked No. 27; Spacca Napoli in Ravenswood was No. 44; Calo Pizzeria in Andersonville was No. 91 and Coalfire Pizza in West Town came in at No. 98.
Between 2022 and 2023, Chicago-style pizza searches rose 18% in searches according to Yelp, signaling an increased craving for the iconic pizza form from Yelpers.
Joining the ranks of quality, world-recognized pizza is not new to Chicago pizzerias. Just last year, Spacca Napoli ranked No. 93 in 50 Top Pizza’s world rankings. Whether it’s a classic tavern-style or hearty deep dish pizza, Chicagoans can rest assured knowing they have some of the best pizzas to enjoy.
