Two years ago, House of MATAHATI (HOM) featured paintings measuring 1x1 metre in ‘A Meter Perspective’ while a year later, artists showcased works that were either lying horizontally or standing vertically in ‘Horizontal or Vertical’. This month, HOM once again challenges artists to produce works based on specific size or format requirements and to think outside the box, or in this case, inside the diameter.
In ‘A Diameter Perspective’, 18 of the most exciting contemporary artists working in Malaysia today, including Ramlan Abdullah, Sabri Idrus, Samsuddin Wahab, Latif Maulan, Faizal Shuif, Azli Wahid and Wong Chee Meng, must work within specific formal constraints, namely round canvases measuring a metre in diameter. The limited space and rather unusual shape should push the creative boundaries of the participating artists to the very limit and result in a wide of intriguing end products.
