It's that time of the year to turn off all non-essential electronics for 60 minutes to observe Earth Hour, the worldwide movement uniting people to protect the planet. If you're up for lights out and a bit fun, check out some of these Earth Hour events in town to show your environmental pride.

Go for a picnic in the dark
The School by Jaya One celebrates Earth Hour with a slew of educational workshops, exhibitions, a camp and WWF Malaysia's Eco Schools Programme, but it's the picnic in the dark at 8.30pm that takes the cake.

See music and cultural performances
Publika's annual month-long eco festival returns with bazaars, workshops, performances and more. For this year's Earth Hour, see experimental group Psycusix deliver high-aesthetic art performances, as well as dancer and choreographer Arifwaran with his dance troupe in outfits made from recycled materials.

Watch a wayang kulit show
Have your face painted with glow-in-the-dark paint and sit down to a traditional wayang kulit show when the lights go out at 1 Mont Kiara's Earth Hour celebration. If you've got something to say about the environment, join the special Earth Hour public speaking contest.

Observe the planets and watch ‘The Martian’
This one's for space geeks: The Planetarium's celebration kicks off with an observation of the moon and Jupiter, and if you're bringing the kids, you can have them create their own lanterns and model of the solar system. Best of all, the night ends with a screening of 'The Martian' at the planetarium's Space Theatre.
