Good news, there’s finally a Malaysia represent at the prestigious annual London Book Fair (LBF). Bad news (in the words of Buku Fixi), this is probably the only country booth without funding from any government or corporate body. Hence, Buku Fixi is teaming up with three other local indie book publishers (DuBook Press, Yusof Gajah Lingard Literary Agency and Clarity Publishing) to fund and manage the booth. It’s believed that this will be the first time (in all 45 years of the LBF) that Malaysia finally has its own booth there, in comparison with Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia having booths for the past few years. According to Buku Fixi’s post on Facebook, they shared booths with the Singaporeans back in 2014. But it’s high time that Malaysian writers, artists and publishers are properly represented at one of the biggest book fairs in the world (there will be more than a thousand companies from 50 countries).

In order to raise funds for the London booth, Buku Fixi has released ‘Little Basket 2016’, the first of a series of literary journals of new Malaysian writing. Much like a little basket of things, the anthology contains essays, short stories (look out for Ling Low’s short story ‘Wanton Noodles’), linocut illustrations, comics and poetry by Foo Sek Han, Zedeck Siew, Sharon Chin, Timothy Nakayama and more. Priced at RM25 each, this issue will have a print run of 3,000 and will not be reprinted. Support Malaysian writing by buying an issue of ‘Little Basket 2016’ here.
