Gurmit Singh, best known for his role as Phua Chu Kang in the hit Singaporean sitcom, will return to KL for two nights for Laugh Die You – The Road to Putrajaya alongside Indi Nadarajah, Kavin Jay and Sulaiman Azmil. Don’t expect him to be in yellow boots though, as he’ll be portraying Hero Singh, a security guard who dreams of becoming a successful singer one day. Amylia Hilda spoke to him to find out more about the inspiration behind the character, his upcoming performance and more.

Tell us a bit about your character in the show.

My character is called Hero Singh. He’s technically only a security guard, but everyone has dreams of making it big so he thinks he’s the ultimate security at all levels; not just the mall or condo where he gets his main jobs, he considers himself the guard of national security. But for which nation is debatable because even he himself isn’t sure. The inspiration came out from the realisation that I have never played a Punjabi character before and we thought this would be something fresh for the audience.

Why should everyone catch this show?

Well, not everyone because there won't be enough space. But 2,000 people should watch this.  If they haven't been to the previous instalments of Laugh Die You, they should come to experience the entertainment that has gotten people to talk about the series and anticipate for more. There’s something for everyone – jokes, games, prizes, songs, impromptu events, and so on.

Can you tell us a bit about the process behind coming up with the material for this show?

For my segment, it’s about how best my character can interact with the audience on stage and how best my character can entertain the audience. It’s easy to assume that comedy is done on the fly and no planning is needed. On the contrary, I’ll spend hours thinking about how each segment (I have about four) will run and run well with the audience, how the games will be fun and entertaining, how I’ll link up the different segments and make sure the show goes smoothly. I’ll also think hard about what songs to do as I have a segment where I sing with the help of the amazing band Hydra.
