As parents we need to plan ahead when it comes to travelling with kids. There are the courageous among us who still have the fire of adventure burning bright and will not only go to the most exotic of destinations, but manage to do so with a toddler, minimal luggage and a baby strapped snugly in its Baby Bjorn. Yes, we salute you.

Because, as all travelling parents know, there’s nothing quite as frightening as a child losing their cool in an enclosed space 30,000 feet in the air or in a jam on an endless highway.

No matter what kind of trip you’re embarking on, the key word is ‘preparation’ – that, nerves of steel and the ability to survive on minimal sleep and nourishment. It’s not all doom and gloom of course, once you arrive at your destination, your holiday can truly begin. Here are a few survival tips for those flying with the troop in tow.

What to bring

Be sure to pack the following in your hand luggage: wet wipes, two sets of clothes, socks, jumper / hoodie, travel blanket and neck pillow.

Convenient packing

Ziploc / sandwich bags in various sizes are your best friend. Use them for sealing soiled clothes, carrying liquid medication, snacks and clean sets of clothes.

Quiet time

Keep them entertained by bringing a ‘quiet’ card or (magnetised) board game, activity book or simple craft. A good trick for older toddlers is to get a variety of small toys (like puzzle games), wrap them up and offer one every two hours – this is very effective during long flights.

Practical tips

1. Always try and book directs flights. It may cost more, but when you factor in layover time and how tired the kids will be waiting for connecting flights, it’s a small price to pay. Confirm seating in advance or you may end up sitting separately, which could be a good thing but irresponsible parenting.

2. Don’t forget to order kids’ meals in advance and make sure to pack enough formula, baby food and healthy snacks (less sugar and salt) to last the flight and then some.

3. Bring practical luggage for both checking in and carry on. It’s not about looking cool anymore but having a hand luggage that you can carry easily while holding a child’s hand or having an infant strapped to you will be infinitely helpful. Plus it should have enough compartments and space to hold everything from wet wipes to your mini first aid kit and everything in between.

4. Be prepared to deal with the effect flying has on young ears. One of the main reasons babies and toddlers cry on planes is due to pressure building up and their inability to ‘pop’ their ears. For babies, breastfeed or put them on the bottle during take-off and landing. As they get older a lollypop or gummy sweet also helps. Don’t be shy to ask for help from airline staff – they always have a trick or two to relieve the pressure.

5. Board last for obvious reasons; the less time the kids are ensconced in a confined space, the better.

6. Apologise if your kid cries a lot, has a tantrum or runs around. There’s always that one passenger who doesn’t appreciate kids and there’s nothing worse than the parent who doesn’t seem to care that their toddler is kicking the seat or lying on the floor wailing.
