The New York-based Najwa – or Najwa Mahiaddin – continues to be remarkable, recasting her music in a myriad of ways; the singer-songwriter began her career in neo-soul, R&B form in 2011, before 2014’s ‘Aurora’, which blends bare electronics with Arabic and Indian-influenced elements. ‘Seri Mersing’, for example, percolates into passion; the ancestral Malay folk song is given the Najwa treatment with avant-garde, ferocious electro beats, paced by ominous vocals.
