Stepping into Knowhere is like stepping into another dimension. Fairy lights on the ceiling provide an ethereal ambience, while brightly coloured murals fuel diners’ imaginations. The feature wall is peppered with vivid depictions of keyholes that act as a window into another world. Each keyhole was painted by local and regional artists and features a different scene – one opens to a starry night sky; another sees ships on a rocky sea; yet another features a quiet lighthouse at the top of a waterfall.

The pork-free kitchen churns out an extensive selection of fusion dishes that combine familiar local flavours with global cuisine, made with premium ingredients like Japanese mussels and Australian beef. Diners can take their pick from pasta and pizza to tapas and roasts. There are also grazing boards perfect for groups – try the sharing platter of wings, crispy baby shrimp, chicken liver pâté, sautéed mushrooms and garlic bread. This pairs deliciously with the house-made sambal belacan salsa.

Specialties include items like the duck confit pizza, lime-cured beef tongue and burnt butter steak. Brunch is served on weekends, with popular highlights like the vegetarian Timbale Ratatouille Pasta, the quirkily named Fuming Duck (smoked duck breast) and the Wild Seabass Vongole Velouté.

Diners will be pleased to know that Knowhere is a business that champions sustainability in as many aspects as possible. From using only metal and bamboo straws in their drinks to working with Kebun-Kebun Bangsar to compost any waste produced by the kitchen, Knowhere strives to create an increasingly green and sustainable lifestyle

Meanwhile, over at the bar taking control is Emran, whose résumé includes being head bartender at Birch, Bacardi Legacy Champion for 2017/2018 and the first runner-up for the Giffard West Cup 2019. Emran has fashioned a menu of drinks that include signatures, classics and a selection of seasonal cocktails inspired by global flavours. Try the Keluarga, Emran’s tribute to the Malaysian childhood – Bacardi, pandan syrup, coconut cream, ginger juice and lime juice combine to produce a cocktail with hints of kaya and teh o’ limau ais; very easy to drink. Or the PB&J, a simple yet delicious concoction of tequila, vermouth and peanut butter – a children’s breakfast made boozy for adults!
