Time Out says

Now best-known as a favourite drug of Hunter S. Thompson, mescaline has a more interesting history than most people perhaps realise. For example, in the 1930s two doctors at the Maudsley Hospital invited schizophreniac patients to unlock their inner worlds via art. The results, however, were varied, so in order to continue exploring the possibility of translating hallucinations and visions onto the canvas, the docs enlisted the help of several surrealist artists. The willing participants were instructed to get high on mescaline and then pick up a brush or pencil. Don't miss the opportunity to see the results in the Museum of the Mind's latest exhibition.
