Two of the satirical artist's most powerful portfolios of drawings, 'Ecce Homo' and 'Hintergrund' depict the corruption and inequality of the Weimar Republic. Consisting of photo-lithographic reproductions of drawings and watercolours, the works capture a society caught between fascism and communism. The portfolios caused quite an uproar when they were published in 1923, Gorsz and his publisher were prosecuted for obscenity and the Nazis who deemed Grosz's work degenerate art, had the print plates publicly burned.
