The best Thorpe Park Rollercoasters

1. Hyperia

Best for: the fearless

Push your daring side to its limits by taking flight on Thorpe Park's most exciting attraction yet. Based on the legend of Hyperia, this 'coaster is all about conquering your fears and making anything seem possible. You'll be hurtling through the sky in all different directions, so good luck keeping track of which way is up. Standing at 236 feet high and with top speeds reaching 81mph, you literally can't get faster or higher (in the UK anyway). You can't miss the opportunity to tell your mates you've been on the country's most thrilling ride.

2. SAW - The Ride

Best for: horror fans

A ride where the thrills begin before it's even set off down the track? It can only be 'SAW - The Ride'. Jigsaw is up to his old tricks in this immersive version of the classic horror flick. The industrial playground that is the queue zone will see you caged-in and brought face to face with the gamemaster himself while eerie music sets the tone for what's about the come. You'll be darting through pendulum blades and flying over floor spikes as you narrowly escape the dangers of Jigsaw's most elaborate torture device. The vertical drop is no joke – prepare to find out that it's just as scary as it looks from below as you start to plummet and lose sight of the track ahead.

3. Stealth

Best for: aspiring Formula 1 drivers

No other ride goes from 0 to 100 quite like 'Stealth'. It's responsible for the UK's fastest hydraulic launch, sending you on your way at a speed of 0-80mph in 1.8 seconds. Before you know it you'll be jetting head-on towards the clouds in a car-themed cart before being brought back down to earth after spending a brief moment at the tip of the 'coaster – just about long enough to take in the view of the whole theme park. Expect a feeling of complete weightlessness over the track's final airtime hill and a surge of adrenaline that's lasts from start to finish.

4. Nemesis Inferno

Best for: turning up the heat

If you like your coaster's a little chaotic, let 'Nemesis Inferno' boggle your brain and make you lose all sense of direction. Prepare to spin, dive and swoop around as you surrender control to the topsy-turvy track. You'll emerge from the flames of a steaming volcano in dramatic fashion before taking a spin on the park's only inverted loop that will see you hanging completely upside down. Can you handle the heat?

5. THE SWARM

Best for: a buzzing ride

We particularly like the rides where your legs are dangling, and this twister will have your legs dangling all ways up – and at nearly 100kph for some of it. Thematically you’re part of an invasion from a flying alien race but, to be honest, you’ll soon forget about that and just bee (sorry) slack-jawed at how damn fast you’re flying through the air and how quickly those dangling legs of yours are whipped around as you hit 4.5 g-force through dive drops, corkscrews, inline twists and whatnot. Fun.

6. Colossus

Best for: falling head over heels

This is the one you can see from the M25. So yes, it’s massive. But that height’s not just for show, you know. No, it’s so this legendary beast can fit in a full ten inversions, including a vertical loop, a cobra roll, a double corkscrew and the UK’s only quadruple barrel roll. And some of those twists and turns are just 10ft from the ground, so ready those screams, people.

7. The Walking Dead: The Ride

Best for: zombie slayers

Switch on your survival instincts and syke yourself up for a run-in with the undead as you enter 'The Walking Dead: The Ride'. You'll be navigating your way to the indoor bunker – which isn't as simple as it sounds. An invasion of Walkers is imminent, so you'll have to move fast to stay ahead of them (45km per hour, to be precise). Combining a rollercoaster ride with live actors, this experience certainly offers something a little different from the other track-based attractions. And if you thought indoor 'coasters didn't have drops, you'd be wrong. This one features a high-speed fall of almost 10 metres. If you're scared of the dark, you may want to give this one a miss...

8. Flying Fish

Best for: first-time riders

How to find out if your kid is destined to be a rollercoaster fanatic? See how they fare on the family-friendly 'Flying Fish'. A great introduction to the big wide world of adrenaline-pumping rides, this mini attraction reaches speed of nearly 20mph and sends you round the bends in an aquatic-themed cart. Remember to show them how to pose for a ride picture – a valuable lesson that's worth learning sooner rather than later...

Height restrictions? 90cm

What are you waiting for?

Time to strap in

Tempted? Of course you are – these are some of the best rolleroasters in the world. But the really good news is that the 'coasters are just part of the Thorpe Park story – there are ghost trains, water rides, a 4D cinema and a whole lot more.
