The Connaught, that most discreetly low-key of London’s mega-expensive hotels, has not one but two great bars. The Coburg, at the front, is a bit like a gentlemen’s club in feel. The Connaught, designed by the renowned David Collins, is all about style and glamour – mirrors, low lighting, silver leaf, tasteful palette, lots of plush seating for intimate conversation. It’s obviously popular with hotel residents too, so don’t come here looking for local colour.

But even if you can only stretch to a single drink, it’s worth it: count out every last penny and treat yourself. The cocktail menu is stuffed with peerless examples of all the originals, but for the true Connaught experience the only way to travel is on the martini trolley – order one and it will be wheeled up beside you, with the drink mixed on top.

Constantly listed as one of the best bars in London and in the world, it is a pleasure to experience this bar. The bar itself is a gorgeous space, and watching the bartenders mix up delicious drinks behind the counter is fun. But the real attraction here is the Martini trolley, so you know you have to order that. The attention to detail shows. Bar manager walks around to ask how everyone is enjoying their drinks.Lovely place for a date if you want to impress.

Currently ranked as the 4th best bar in the world and firmly ranked as one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been fortunate enough to have a cocktail, the Connaught is a spectacularly gorgeous place to celebrate the most special of occasions.

Taken there for my birthday on a recent rainy Bank Holiday Monday, the bar was deserted so we were lucky enough to feel like it was our own private watering hole. Staff are utterly wonderful from the moment the top-hatted doorman ushers you into the lobby and in the bar itself, service is super low key and welcoming without ever being obsequious or stuffy.

The cocktail menu includes Masterpieces such as the Martini which is served from its own trolley, Expressions which are inspired by global travels and Aqua, whose offerings conjure up the Mediterranean before you even as the English rain slides down the windows outside.

The Mulata Daisy is a beautiful mix of Bacardi Heritage 44% rum, crème de cacao, fresh lime juice, caster sugar, fennel seeds and Galliano L’Autentico while the Mediterranean Soda evokes a blushing sunset with Babicka vodka, bergamot sherbert, pink grapefruit soda & masthia liqueur. The best cocktails are so smooth and easy to drink, you never even notice the alcohol itself, just the blend of flavours within the glass and both of these ticked that box in style.

Complimentary snacks includes incredible olives, fat & shiny as they rolled around their dish and crispy wafers that melted on the tongue – both are replenished graciously and freely throughout your stay and it really does feel like the sort of place you could while away an afternoon with very little trouble at all. True, I’m not sure my wallet would be as happy as my spirit but even one drink in the Connaught is enough to sooth the soul and make you feel very, very special.

This place is very classy without feeling stuffy. The cocktails are masterfully crafted and delicious. The decor is really nice and is just a treat to go to.
