Eggs, meat and breadcrumbs – the scotch egg has all the main food groups covered. And they taste damn good too, which is why the annual Scotch Egg Challenge is back in town to celebrate this humble snack. Now in its fifth year, the challenge will be held at The Canonbury Tavern on October 20, where a panel of egg-sperts will conduct a blind taste test to find out who's really cracked it in the scotch egg game. If you want to enter, email canonbury@youngs.co.uk for an application and get 'em in before September 10. But if you'd prefer to stay out of the kitchen, you can also go down and watch the contestants go egg-to-egg – it's free entry and you'll get to try some of the best scotch eggs in London. This ain't no yolk.

It costs £25 to enter the competition, but you can go along and watch for free.

The Scotch Egg Challenge is at The Canonbury Tavern, 21 Canonbury Place, N1 2NS on October 20, 7.30pm.

Oh and have you heard about the scotch egg burger?
