Everyone's Instagramming: Jeppe Hein's colourful social benches

Originally manufactured for the derrières of New Yorkers, Jeppe Hein’s Modified Social Benches are intended to break the traditional behavioural patterns of people in public spaces. The wiggly, round and unconventionally shaped seats have been flown across the pond and plonked at the Southbank Centre, challenging the distance users choose to leave between themselves and others on the bench. Forget etiquette around personal space – just go right ahead and park, perch or balance your butt on one.

Find and sit for free on the brightly coloured pews at the Southbank Centre until September 24.
