Is 'Black Mass' the Johnny Depp comeback everyone's been waiting for?

The answer to that question is yes and no – the grim gangster epic 'Black Mass' (think 'Goodfellas' but drabber with less music) had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival today (it hits UK cinemas in November). After endless Tim Burton and 'Pirates' films, it's definitely Depp's most serious role in years. He plays James 'Whitey' Bulger, a Boston crim who eluded the law from the 1970s until his eventual arrest in 2011. And Depp throws himself into the role, sporting bad teeth, awful hair and a murderous grimace. It's not a subtle performance - but it's still his most engaging role in years. And it's definitely one for grown-ups: you don't see Depp garrotting anyone with a dead stare while playing Captain Jack Sparrow, that's for sure.
