Of all the many mysteries in the complex history of the London grime scene, there’s none greater than this: why did Wiley and Dizzee Rascal fall out? A murky incident in 2002, when Dizzee was hospitalised in Ayia Napa, drove a wedge between the two Bow boys who had been at the centre of grime in its early days. Now we may finally have an explanation, surprisingly from Wiley himself.
As he prepares to lead out a crew of grime superstars in the Red Bull Culture Clash next week, we spoke to the scene-leading MC and found him in a talkative mood. Alongside discussing what he reckons US rappers think of grime (‘They can’t accept it on the same level they can accept hip hop’) and his upcoming autobiography, he exclusively revealed what actually happened on Ayia Napa, and why he and Dizzee haven’t spoken in years. ‘You want to know the truth?
