Seductive vamp, crazy-voiced clown, fashion muse, alien visitation – there’s no one quite like Joey Arias. The black lacquered hair, pristine make-up and sharp-cut couture suggest a noir femme fatale but this unique performer does sweet, scandalous or serene as easily as smokey. The constants are his astonishing voice and magnetic charisma. After a couple of recent one-off shows in London – at the V&A in 2011 as part of the museum’s Postmodernism exhibition and the Southbank Centre in 2012 as part of his friend Antony Hegarty’s Meltdown season – Arias is back for his first extended run in a couple of decades. Not to be missed.
