Comedy

The Bedford

icon-location-pin Balham

This friendly boozer is a great place to check out comedy (particularly at the regular Banana Cabaret Comedy Club) and music (folk, blues and rock, from both new acts and rising talents) or just kick back and enjoy a few birthday pints.

Capacity: 25-200

Bars and pubs, Sports bars

The Four Quarters

icon-location-pin Peckham Rye

A dedicated classic and retro arcade games bar, The Four Quarters is the place to go if you want to brush up on your 'Street Fighter II' skills or just revel in nostalgia by playing 'Pac Man' until your eyes go square. If you're not quite of the age to remember some of those titles, the upstairs room features consoles with games such as 'Mario Kart', 'Sonic the Hedgehog', 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Goldeneye'. To utilise the stacks of old arcade games, there are regular gaming tournaments, plus occasional film screenings, one-off events and private parties.

The Miller

icon-location-pin The Borough

Although it looks like a dodgy council estate pub on the outside, within, it’s been given a squat-chic makeover with playful contemporary art and comfy old chesterfields, attracting a crowd that seems to have been teleported in from London’s more outré art colleges. Maybe they’re here for the vintage arcade games. You might want to throw some bday shapes to the DJ sets. Do this in the safe knowledge that Guy’s Hospital, with its A&E department, is on the other side of the road.

Capacity: 35-70

Bars and pubs

Sebright Arms

icon-location-pin Bethnal Green

The crowd at the Sebright Arms is young and resolutely trendy. Perhaps some of the bustle is down to excitement about the entertainment no longer the variety turns (or prizefighting) laid on in the good old days, but music and comedy instead provided by DJs, bands and comics, both in the main bar and downstairs function room. The venue space downstairs hosted The XX, Laura Marling, and The Vaccines for cheap-as-dirt shows before they hit stardom. It's a great place to play the 'next big thing' lottery.

Star of Kings

icon-location-pin King's Cross

Owned by the same team as The Star of Bethnal Green and the newer Star at Hackney Downs, this tucked away pub north of King's Cross has plenty to offer. Regularly hosting both live music and DJ nights, the venue tends to attract a fairly cool crowd, but there's more than enough room for those who just want a drink as well. Said gigs and DJ nights take place in the venue's ample basement, which can also be hired out for private parties and birthday shindigs.

Water Poet

icon-location-pin Spitalfields

Buried away off Bishopsgate in a cobbled corner close to Spitalfields Market where city suits and Shoreditch collide, the Water Poet is a multi-tasking gem with a bar, restaurant, cool pool parlour, a downstairs theatre and a super-duper sun-trap of a beer garden. Adorned in dishevelled decadence, it’s all down-holstered leather and velvets, gilded metal and myriad chairs on which to flex your pint-curls; from Chesterfields to church pews, school chairs to picture-house seats.

Capacity: 60-100
