The capital’s full of ways to watch movies. There are loads of mega multiplexes and bougie hipster spots with posh sofas and deluxe food, and they're great. But here we're saluting the lesser know film spots in our city. Think cool film clubs and alt cinemas: from sci-fi specials to cuddly pop ups and arthouse hotspots to a film club celebrating crap movies. Some even cost less than a fiver.
A screening series for people who really love films, Deeper into Movies focuses on rare, unusual, challenging movies, both fiction and non-fiction. Or, as they put it: Fuck Netflix. Showing at the Moth Club in Hackney and The Five Bells in New Cross, the programme serves up cult, edgy treasures from David Lynch, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Richard Curtis (only joking). Dark, dangerous and dependably good.
Describing itself as a ‘youth club for adults’, The Exhibit offers a cinema amid three floors of entertainment, including boozicals (brunchtime singalongs to classic musicals), dog-friendly screenings (your pooch will be well fed) and spooktaculars for Halloween. Its mixture of movies, pizzas and a relaxed feel make it great for a date.
