The World Cup’s over, the heatwave has finally died down, and everyone seems to have buzzed off on holiday, leaving a smug out-of-office to torment anyone still stuck in the city. You’d be forgiven for feeling a little deflated by the weekend ahead, and that’s before you check your bank balance. But take heart! London is full of free things to do that'll get your pulse racing again.
This weekend is particularly strong on free music-based events. Who needs to fork out the big bucks for a hyped day festival when you can hear some stellar sounds, without opening your wallet? Learn to play a brand new instrument, listen to world-class acts, or watch physical theatre artists move to a heart-pumping soundtrack at one of this weekend’s crop of free performances. Whatever you do, you’ll feel a bit more alive (and a bit less broke) before next week rolls round.

1. Learn to play steel pan at Southbank Centre’s weekend-long celebration
It’s impossible not to feel at least a little bit joyful when you hear a steel pan band: there’s something so hopeful about clear calypso notes on a lazy summer day. And Southbank Centre will be full of those sweet sounds all weekend, thanks to a fest celebrating the 75th anniversary of steel pan playing arriving on these shores. Have a go at hammering out your own tunes with Impact Steel Band’s workshop (Sun Jul 26, 11.30am) and you’ll be a connoisseur of pan by the time carnival rolls round. Or save your energies for appreciating pan orchestras from all over the UK at a big Riverside Terrace takeover with Just Vibez (Sat Jul 25, 12noon), followed by a Jubilee Gardens get-together (Sun Jul 26, 12noon) with bands and DJs.

2. Hit the water at Summer Splash
London’s outdoor swimming obsession sends queues snaking outside Hampstead Ponds or London Fields every summer. But if you want to cool off, there’s an easier, more budget-friendly way. Royal Victoria Docks is opening its lido for free for a blissful three weeks this summer, starting this weekend. You'll find deckchairs, sandpits, and plenty of shade to relax in, on the edge of the water: wear your biggest hat and pretend you’re in the French Riviera, before zipping off home on the DLR.

3. Spy on a working beehive in a sweet new exhibition in the Bank of England
‘Bees and honey’ is cockney rhyming slang for money, so it kinda makes sense that there’s a buzzing hive at the centre of the Bank of England’s freshly-opened new exhibition from Bompas & Parr. There’s a magnifying glass on offer so you can take a good butcher’s (more rhyming slang for you there) at the Bermondsey Street Bees’ glass-walled hive. There’s also a chance to see if you can tell real honey from fake, a hands-on chance to inspect forged banknotes, and a look into the history of honey in food, in a sweet collaboration between the worlds of food and finance.

4. See impressive physical theatre at Ensemble Festival
If you’re not sure how you feel about physical theatre, turn up at this two-day free festival and get a taste of this adventurous art form. ElevateHer by Daughters of the Wire will send female ropewalkers tiptoeing through the air, Garbh will put a fresh new spin on Gujarati folk dance, and Fragments of Us by Talawa will use dance and spoken word to explore ideas of ancestry and belonging.

5. Listen to the Philharmonic’s string quartet at Wembley Park’s eclectic outdoor music fest
Who needs to drag a tent, a cool box, and several feckless mates onto a train out of town when you can get a little dose of festival fun for free in west London? This afternoon fest in Wembley Park has an intriguing line-up including singer-songwriter Scarlette Fever Trio, folk duo Rueben & Gotxi, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra String Quartet, who rehearse nearby. Round out your Sunday by listening to the house band, who’ll close the day with sing-a-long festival anthems. There are craft beer and food stalls to keep attendees fed and watered: just book in advance via Eventbrite to secure your spot.

6. Hear a chamber orchestra in a community space
The BBC Proms are in full swing, filling the Royal Albert Hall with musicians from across the globe. But if you can’t get to the Proms, Brixton Chamber Orchestra might just be coming to you this summer. Its tour of council estates is bringing a 30-piece ensemble right to the doorsteps of communities across south London, delivering a lively line-up of tunes spanning classical, grime, gospel, jazz and more. No need to book: just show up and hear concrete walls reverberate to classical sounds.
