It’s been 16 years since the mega success of the stage musical adaptation of Legally Blonde in London, which won three Olivier awards and was a massive step in the stage career of a young Sheridan Smith.
It ran for almost three years – significantly longer than it played on Broadway, where it originated. And it’s clear London is a city that loves the story of ditsy pink-loving wannabe lawyer Elle Woods, who follows her snobby WASP boyfriend to Harvard and ends up cracking a major case: we also had a big revival in 2022 at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
And now it’s time for a third production! This latest iteration of Legally Blonde is a touring edition that originated at Leicester’s musical powerhouse the Curve Theatre, and is coming to London for the first time. It’s directed by the Curve’s boss Nikolai Foster, who seems to have been more or less handed the keys to the gigantic London Coliseum: his production of Legally Blonde will play a two-month stint there in the spring, right before his new production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory debuts there in the summer.
Actor, Love Island winner and Strictly Come Dancing 2025 runner-up Amber Davies will play Elle, returning to the theatre where she starred a year ago in the hit Great Gatsby musical.
London Coliseum, Mar 22-May 22 2027.
