To be part of the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, restaurants have to be exceptional. They must be consistent, have mastery of flavour, quality ingredients and a chef whose personality shines through in the cooking. And the only people qualified to judge all of that is Michelin’s team of anonymous inspectors.
Every month, those inspectors are on the road sampling new and existing restaurants, deliberating over which ones are worthy of a place in the coveted guide. And every month, a select few make the cut.
Normally, a decent handful of restaurants in London are among the new additions. In July, Japanese restaurant Aki and Greek spot Clio were among four that made the cut and in June, Burro in Covent Garden was one of three London places on the list. But of the 22 British and Irish restaurants added to the guide in August, just one is from London. Read on for the lowdown.

The Fat Badger
Standing alone as the only London addition last month is Notting Hill’s Fat Badger. Though this place alleges that it is in fact a pub, Michelin called the Fat Badger ‘worlds away from your usual London local’. Time Out food editor Leonie Cooper agrees that it is not a pub and not even a gastropub but ‘simply a very good restaurant’.
To find it, you’ve got to enter through the backdoor of a townhouse on Portobello Road (past a woman with a guest list) and ascend to the top floor. Once you take a seat, you’re in for a no-choice five course meal, focused on old school British fare. A sample menu includes dishes such as chilled aubergine, pepper and courgette soup, dover sole with sobrasada and white beans and a fig leaf ice cream bun with poached peach.
During her visit, Leonie had guinea fowl for her main and declared it a ‘triumph’ with ‘hunks of soft, juicy meat on a fragrant, almost medieval tumble of foie gras, pear and sprouts’. She also tasted hasselback potatoes which were ‘the most flawless example of the Swedish-style spud we’ve ever come across, each sliver perfectly crisp and salty, stacked like the inside of a filing cabinet if it were made of carbs’.
310 Portobello Road, Notting Hill, W10 5TA.
