The word ‘cult’ gets bandied around a lot when it comes to London food spots. So much so that it’s lost some of its potency. But there are some places which are deserving of hyperbolic status, and among them is Camberwell’s Toad Bakery.

Just rock up to Peckham Road on a Saturday morning and the queue alone will tell you everything you need to know about the popularity of its immaculately laminated wares.

Toad is, in our opinion, easily one of the Big Smoke’s best bakeries. And we’re not the only ones showing its cornbread croissants and chocolatines some love. The capital’s most exciting up-and-coming chefs ranked it among London’s best places for baked goods, as did the Good Food Guide. It even picked up London Bakery of the Year at the 2025 National Bakery Awards.

Now, this pastry nirvana is doubling its flaky footprint. Deptford locals, we advise you to loosen your waistbands, because Toad’s second site will open in your neck of the woods.

We don’t know the exact opening date yet, but we can say that the new bakehouse will debut in St Paul’s House some time in June.

The new venue is significantly bigger than the Camberwell OG, providing plenty of room for masterful pastry invention, as well as a new espresso machine. Plus, any budding pâtissiers will be able to watch and learn from the masters thanks to the open-plan kitchen.

‘Moving most of our production to this new site will give the whole team more space to create, develop and bake for a new crowd,’ founders Rebecca Spaven and Oliver Costello said in a statement.

Toad Bakery will open in St Paul’s House, Deptford High Street, SE8 4BX in June.
