Londoners are famous for their impatience. You don’t want to face the fury of a Londoner in a hurry, let alone when they are stuck in traffic.
If you want to avoid getting into a sticky situation on the road, a new interactive map has just revealed where London drivers are most likely to get stuffed behind roadworks, and which areas carried out the most road construction in the past year.
Motoring experts from tyre retailer Blackcircles have published a study showing the total number of road works undertaken by councils or its contractors in 2024, using information obtained from a Freedom of Information request. The Standard then turned this information into an interactive map, showing London’s worst areas for roadworks.
Per the Blackcircles data, Westminster is the capital’s worst spot for road maintenance. Westminster Council carried out a mega 18,123 repairs in 2024, which included carriageway resurfacing, kerb realignments, and surface dressings.
Southwark was the second place where drivers are most likely to have their journey disrupted by works. The borough carried out 8,941 roadworks in 2024.
But the City of London, which ranked third for the most roadworks, had more road maintenance in proportion to its population than anywhere in the UK. The Square Mile had 8,226 works in 2024, equivalent to 6,111 per 10,000 people. This is significantly more than Westminster’s 857.
If you want to avoid roadworks, head to Hounslow, which had the least in 2024. The borough carried out 578 – 20 per 10,000 residents – roadworks last year.
