London has an excellent roster of live music venues, but new ones are always welcome. And that’s exactly what could be in store for one borough south of the river, as plans have been revealed for a development with an all-new live music venue.

The development is called Timber Square, and it’s been designed by Hawkins\Brown for Landsec on the site of a former railway depot in Southwark. The project is named after a timber yard that occupied the area in the 19th century, and it’s been underway for years. Phase two of the development includes a potential music venue, and it was approved at a council planning meeting last month.

The music venue – which is still subject to an operator being found – could open in old railway arches on the western side of the development. The plans also applied to use the arches as a bar, nightclub, cinema or theatre.

A new music venue isn’t all that could open at Timber Square. The development will also boast a whopping 1,950 square metres of space for shops and restaurants, as well as two new buildings with a combined 50,000 square metres of office space.

Southwark Council approved the latest phase of the development on July 22.
