The biggest urban winery in Britain is opening in southeast London

Londoners, you don’t have to journey to France’s vineyards to enjoy exceptional wine. This city has a marvellous array of tip-top wine bars – and soon the capital’s winemaking scene is getting a huge new addition. A new ‘urban winery’ is opening in Canada Water, southeast London, and it will be the biggest of its kind in the UK to date.

Vagabond Wines will open their ‘most ambitious project yet’ on Deal Porters Way in December: a self-pour wine bar complete with a fully operational 100-tonne winery serving over 100 different types of wine. English wines will be made at the venue, poured from the barrel. 

The huge space is around 6,000 sq ft and will be led by winemaker José Quintana. There will also be small plates – naturally, it’s a London wine bar – and large plates serving steak and chips, patatas bravas and truffle arancini as part of their autumn menu.

It’s part of the huge £4 billion regeneration in Canada Water where 40 new buildings and three high-rise towers will be built in the coming years. Vagabond Wines will move into the ground floor of Dock Shed above the new Canada Water Leisure Centre, which is next to recently opened dockside entertainment venue Corner Corner, and it will have capacity for more than 300 visitors a day. That’s a lot of glasses of sauv blanc.  

This follows the opening of the futuristic vertical indoor farm Harvest, which opened in Corner Corner earlier this year.

We’ve brought winemaking back to the water and built a space that connects people to the stories, craft and community behind every bottle. And now, with our new online platform, that same spirit of discovery can be shared anywhere in the UK.’

Alice Keown, Leasing Director Restaurants and Leisure at British Land, added: ‘The addition of Vagabond to Canada Water forms a key part of our vision to create one of the most vibrant cultural and experiential destinations in London. It will be in a prime position surrounded by brand new homes, workspace and the leisure centre.’

Vagabond at Canada Water will open on December 4 2025.
