Back in February the UK Government unveiled the shortlist of designers in the running to design a new national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II. It was revealed that several starchitect firms – including Foster + Partners, Heatherwick Studio and WilkinsonEyre – were among the five companies shortlisted to design the St James’ Park project.
And now we have a much better idea of what each of those designers wants London’s Queen Elizabeth II National Memorial to look like. This week the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee and the Cabinet Office have published the proposed designs by Foster + Partners, Heatherwick Studio, J&L Gibbons, Tom Stuart-Smith and WilkinsonEyre.
The brief was for a memorial that is an ‘emotionally powerful place and a space for pause and reflection’ and, depending on the design, the budget will range from £23 million to £46 million. A consultation has been launched so that the public can give feedback on the designs, and the winning design team will be announced this summer.
Here’s what each shortlisted design looks like.
