Last week London airports made headlines after a ranking of the world’s aviation hubs by Skytrax featured not one, not two, but three of the capital’s airports in the top 100. London Heathrow, Gatwick and City were all crowned among the best on the planet – and, TBH, none of it was much of a surprise. Heathrow and Gatwick are huge and offer travellers a fantastic range of destinations, while City is regularly praised as a small but mighty hub.
If you skimmed the awards, you may have missed that another London airport scooped an impressive prize. In the ‘world’s best low-cost airline terminals’ category, none other than London Luton came in the top 10, nipping in at 10th place.
Skytrax’s awards were dished out according to votes from survey respondents around the world. The company quizzes customers on everything from baggage delivery times to airports’ cleanliness and the friendliness of staff, and it assessed a whopping 575 airports around the world.
Skytrtax describes its ‘best low cost airline terminals in the world’ category as celebrating ‘airport terminals that specialise in providing service to low-cost airlines’. Terminal 3 at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport topped the poll.
While you might not necessarily think of Luton as one of the capital’s flashiest airports, this isn’t the first time in the past 12 months that the north-of-London hub has received an award. Last July Luton was named the best ‘small’ airport in Europe by Airports Council International (ACI).
And Luton has more exciting news on the horizon. At the beginning of this month the airport confirmed that its expansion – featuring a second terminal – is officially happening. LTN hopes to double its annual passenger numbers to 32 million by 2043.
So, congrats Luton! You can find out what was won by London airports at this year’s Skytrax Awards here, and see the full awards results here.
