Later this week London will face its first strike action on the tube since all the way back in March 2023 (strikes in November 2024 were called but suspended). RMT union members will walk out from this Friday September 5, with the most disruptive action kicking off from September 7.
Before the strikes have even begun, they’ve been disruptive – Coldplay have postponed two dates of their record-breaking run at Wembley Stadium. Find out how to navigate strikes at those gigs here.
Worried about getting around the capital during the upcoming strikes? You can find a general guide to travelling across the city on industrial action days here, and see a specific guide to the Elizabeth line on strike days here. But what about the Overground? Here’s what you need to know.
When are the September 2025 tube strikes?
RMT union members are walking out from Friday, September 5 to Thursday, September 11. However, the most impactful period of action will be from September 7 to 11.
Will the Underground strikes affect the Overground?
The Overground network – that is, the Lioness, Windrush, Weaver, Liberty, Mildmay and Suffragette lines – is expected to be running as usual throughout the tube strikes. However, TfL warns that it (as well as the Lizzie line and trams) is ‘likely to be extremely busy’.
How long will the industrial action last?
The tube strikes will last for five whole days, with TfL saying ‘little to no service’ is expected.
DLR strikes will take place on two dates: Tuesday September 9 and Thursday September 11 2025.
Will trains and buses be disrupted?
Buses and non-tube trains will be running as normal, but they will likely be much busier than usual. Allow more time than usual for travel, and expect to be crammed in.
