Strauss declared that Elgar was the 'first English progressivist'.

Elgar's oratorio 'The Dream of Gerontius' is performed by London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Choir and Clare College Choir Cambridge under Sir Mark Elder, with Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano), Paul Groves (tenor) and Brindley Sherratt (baritone).

(Note: at 5.30pm, a pre-concert talk about the Edwardian aesthetic; RFH, free.)
