Time Out says

A cosy ‘pay what you like’ Walthamstow café with a charitable social mission.

Despite this being one of the richest cities in the world, more than a quarter of London’s population (around 2.4 million people) live in poverty. This lovely little Walthamstow café is trying to tackle that problem by offering a free breakfast to anyone who needs it.

So how does it work? Eggs & Bread primarily serves (you guessed it!) eggs and bread. The twist: the café is self-service and open to all, providing basic ingredients and cooking facilities so that anyone can make themselves a hot drink and a nutritious breakfast. All food and drink is pay-what-you-wish – so that anyone can eat free, and those who are able to pay more can cover someone else’s breakfast. All this in a nice environment designed so visitors can feel safe, warm, comfortable and equal to everyone else there.

Head over to the café at 191 Wood Street to enjoy some eggs and soldiers and leave a donation. Or sign up for one of Eggs & Bread’s weekly supperclubs, the proceeds of which help to support the breakfast scheme. And for those wanting to get properly stuck in, the café is on the lookout for people with a few hours spare in the mornings to help run the brekkie shift. Because, as they say, ‘everyone deserves a good start to the day’.
