If you have a Japanese friend, bring them along to translate everything for you - that's how authentic this place is. Fumio Ichibangase, the owner, prides himself on keeping his restaurant smalland having business purely from word-of-mouth so he can ensure that his customers are well looked after. Often, I would see large tables of Japanese folks celebrating with 3+ hour long degustations - plate after plate will come as they eat leisurely; slurping their noodles and drinking sake, giving them all a healthy warm glow. It creates such a warm atmosphere that you can’t help but want to feel included in their celebrations. So, if you’re celebrating something special, bring your appetite and your friends to create your own Japanese banquet!

They have a very extensive list of fresh seafood including everything from different cuts of fatty tuna or salmon to razor clam or uni and will be different every single time you go. All the sushi here is wonderful; however deviate outside of the main menu and go for the specials black board - that’s were they have the really interesting dishes such as grilled fish jaw, grilled ox tongue and their delicious black cod; and finish off with some in-house made noodles. There is also a separate lunch or afternoon menu which includes rice don or noodle dishes such as udon, soba or ramen. There’s always such a variety of dishes, ingredients and textures that you can really have a different culinary experience every time.

Tip: Try and get Fumio-san or his wife to help you out with the specials black board as it is all in Japanese and they tend to have better english to translate. You will generally get a small house starter each such as negitoro (chopped up tuna belly) or a vermicelli noodle salad - this is added to your bill and only a few pounds per person.

Good For: special occasion, something different, casual lunch/ dinner, authentic experience

The last time I was here was at least 5 years ago, and I had a great time, as I was drinking with friends two of which were Japanese I suggested why not try this place as it was near. Fortunately not much has changed as it not a place you usually come across, in fact, I was telling them about the Monkfish liver I had last time but we couldn't find it on the menu, until we asked for the specials menu, see attached! The hot sake was served in a small bottle that was in a beautiful container of hot water (1st time I've seen this) and food and serves made it just a perfect night! 

Next time I will not leave it so long!
