It’s that time of year. The days are getting colder and the nights are growing longer. Curling up inside with a stiff drink, ideally next to an open fire, looks increasingly appealing. But London is absolutely brimming with fancy-looking spirits. It can be hard to know which ones are best – especially when they come with a hefty price tag.

And, of course, you also want to support top-notch local businesses where you can. London has loads of great, innovative distilleries producing everything from mega-strong special edition brews to delicate botanical works of alcoholic art (and sometimes both at the same time). So we’ve narrowed down a few of the best: here are six of the finest London spirits to buy right now.

Best spirits in London

Want yourself some gin but not so keen on the chemicals that usually go into making and preserving it? Head over to Sacred in Highgate. While Sacred’s ‘vacuum distillation’ lab might closely resemble the lair of a mad scientist, the company only uses organically-sourced ingredients. That means that each of the classic Sacred Gin’s dozen elements are free of both pesticides and herbicides – and they’re all much tastier because of it. Sacred’s Pink Grapefruit and Cardamom varieties are similarly delicious.

The East London Liquor Company is one of the capital’s loudest, boldest spirit companies, and the East London Vodka is one of its finest products. Made of 100 percent British wheat, distilled in – you guessed it – east London (Bow Wharf, to be exact) and boasting a supremely velvety taste, it’s all served in a stylishly minimalist bottle. And if that all wasn’t tempting enough, the point of the ELLC is to make great spirits at affordable prices – the East London Vodka is very, very reasonably priced.

Over 300 years ago, London started Britain’s rum craze, importing the spirit for the rest of country – and that’s the vast, rich tradition that Cabby’s White Rum is paying tribute to. Named after the former profession of its founder Moses Odong, Cabby’s is fermented, distilled and matured in Mile End and claims to be the first ever white rum produced in London. It’s also award-winningly tasty, combining sweet cane, black treacle, oak, coconut, citrus and more.

Dulwich literally means ‘the meadow where dill grows’, and where better to get a taste of one of south London’s most alluring boroughs than through the smooth flavours of Fatty’s Organic London Dry Gin? Distilled in Dulwich and infused with locally-sourced dill, Fatty’s is hard to miss in its sleek and waxy pastel green bottle – and it’s a statement on the inside too. Renowned for its luxuriously soft, crisp finish, Fatty’s is at the forefront of London’s organic gin scene.

Like Brixton Market itself, Market Row’s rum is a vivid celebration of flavours and cultures from around the world. Starting with a blended pot of rums from distilleries across Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic, Market Row adds Kenyan black tea, Pakistan red rose and Nigerian hibiscus from Brixton Market before redistilling the rum for up to five years. The results are lightly spiced and nicely balanced, one of London’s most vibrant and characterful brews.

To some people, flavoured gin is a heresy – but not us. And when they’re as good as the City of London Distillery’s Murcian Orange Gin, what’s not to like? Distilled in a narrow street near St. Paul’s, the flavouring here of the oranges from Murcia, Spain, isn’t overly sweet or overpowering. It’s perfectly placed to be either citrussed-up or diluted by a suitable tonic, and is sure to convert even the strictest gin purists to the fruity spirit cause.
