Brixton Market’s retail and food scene is typical of the area’s gloriously idiosyncratic nature – and Brixton Barbers & Tattoos fits in perfectly. Looking like a cross between a traditional railway barbershop and a Deep South tattoo parlour, it marked its opening in April 2011 with a performance by grime artist KONFLICT and its owners Irfan Rafiq and Ash Chaudhry’s also own the icecream shop next door. On the hair menu is a cut and finish for £16 and a hot towel shave for £10 by Santiago, who we’re reliably informed is Zorro personified. Women’s hairdressing will be available from Thursday to Sunday, along with piercings and tattoos. ‘We get funny looks sometimes because we keep our hair oil in a Jack Daniel’s bottle, but there’s no partying in here. Honest!’ says Chaudhry.
