What makes a good winter hat? First things first: it should keep your head warm. Obviously. Maybe it should also keep your ears snuggled, or be waterproof and windproof, or even have a peak to keep out that low-slung winter sun.

But a great winter hat also has to be fashionable. After all, if a hat is only good in a practical sense, it’s only doing half the job. The ideal hat combines warmth and cosiness with the height of style: something that’ll still look fabulous even through the worst of the wintry wind and rain.

The UK has a rich history of making top-notch clothing, and its hats are no different. Throughout Britain there are plenty of hatmakers bringing centuries worth of experience to their craft. From those, we picked five of this year’s finest pieces of winter headwear.

Beanies aren’t just for skaters and slackers – get with the times! Here’s one for a particularly sharp, smart, simple look. The difference between Johnstons of Elgin’s beanie and your usual kind is that this is staggeringly well made. Johnstons has been making clothing for over 200 years – the company produces its hats in Hawick, Scotland, to a remarkably high standard. But this ribbed beanie isn’t just versatile and timeless. Being both 100 percent cashmere and four-ply, it’s soft and warm too.

From Red Army comrades to American frontiersmen, history has proven that not only does a trapper hat keep you warm but it makes you look really, really cool. It’s an iconic look. The British Sheepskin Company keeps to the traditional trapper style, but, made in England from plush merino sheepskin and leather bindings, the Somerset-based hatters add a little extra luxury. The ear flaps can be worn hanging or fastened on top – and for extra snugness, the BSC can offer a bespoke service too.

Named after a Robert Burns poem, Tam O’Shanter hats were originally meant for ceremonial, military or academic occasions. But these days the ToS is just as much a fashion statement: Penelope Chilvers’ hat is inspired by its Scottish heritage, made out of 100 percent lambswool and knitted by a traditional family-owned mill in Scotland. Thankfully, Chilvers’ Tam O’Shanter isn’t as bare as the traditional kind. It comes with added (mostly knitted) extras that promise warmth as well as style.

Imagine you’re out on the high seas, water rampaging around you, boat rocking on the waves and drenched in salty spray. You’re living the harsh life of a fisherman, but you get to wear this short wool beanie – so you are also, naturally, a beacon of fashion. This piece by Highland 2000 is made of 100 percent British wool and crafted in England using a traditional woollen yarn. It’s fitting for all occasions, a strong look in any environment.

If you’re the kind of person that gets easily bored with a new hat, Bobbl might be for you. These are bobble hats with a twist: that the bobble is interchangeable. The company makes plenty of enormous, outlandish bobbles, but it also makes subtler, more understated designs. In other words, whatever your mood is, there’s a bobble for that. That novelty aside, Bobbl’s hats are made in the UK out of 100 percent merino wool – so not only are they versatile, they’re comfy too.
