London Fields Lido

A dogged 18-year campaign by the London Fields User Group saved this 50-metre lido from demolition, and it reopened in 2006. Open year-round, it’s now run by Greenwich Leisure Ltd. It’s heated and well used: during busy holiday periods it closes at lunchtime between sessions to make sure as many people as possible can enjoy it. Picnicking is off-limits but there are two cafés.

Despite being managed by Better this place is really well run. It's Olympic sized (50m) so you can get some proper swimming in, plus a bit of sunbathing on the side if the weather is right. They have a snack/coffee bar too. Indoor and outdoor changing rooms, plus showers. Gets crazy busy if its really warm, but is best in the freezing cold with steam rising from the water, so you're swimming in a cloud!

Love this place so much that I'm secretly hoping for not too much sun this summer, so I don't have to share it with the fair-weather swimmers. Great staff, nice lido-ers, and nothing more beautiful on a cold winter's day than the steam rising off the water and the icy tree branches against the sky.

I be been swimming for years and I have tried several pools in London . By far the best in London in terms of length &size of lanes, facilities, water temp, people, price (it counts as gll-better', if you have the £30/month option) and opening hours . To avoid only in hot summer days;it fills up with people who don't know how to swim or to behave when swimming . Also sometimes the indoors changing rooms are really busy - the ones outside though are great .

Swimming there on a crisp winter's day is amazing. I definitely swim further and faster just through being there. Combine it with a brisk bike ride to get there and you're in exercise heaven.
