Fidelio

A revival of Jürgen Flimm's penetrating production of Beethoven's only opera – a glorious work exalting the light of liberty and humanity over the darkness of tyranny and oppression. Nina Stemme stars as Leonora, the faithful wife who is determined to rescue her husband, Florestan (sung by Endrik Wottrich), secretly imprisoned for his political views. Kirill Petrenko conducts the wonderful score, which includes the triumphant 'Prisoners' Chorus'. (Sung in German with English surtitles; running time: two hours 45 minutes.)
