Nero will sadly be forever known as the final musical by the late, great Duncan Sheikh – the Spring Awakening and American Psycho composer who passed away in September 2026. His last musical Nero had been through various workshop iterations over two decades, and was finally set to premiere at Southwark Playhouse in a production from venerable Brit Lindsay Posner. And it’s still going ahead. Written in collaboration with Sheik’s longterm collaborator Steven Sater, Nero does, of course concern Emperor Nero. Largely remembered by history for being evil. cruel and possibly appointing his horse to the Roman senate, Sheikh and Sater’s long-gestating musical drills into his early years as ‘an artist, a performer
and a reluctant heir thrust into unimaginable power’. Rising US stage star Andrew Barth Feldman plays the emperor in question.
