[title]
When it was first produced at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton in 2019, Anthony McCarten’s play about the short, troubled tenure of Pope Benedict XVI and his replacement by the more liberal Pope Francis was called ‘The Pope’. Cinephiles might guess why the name has changed: the acclaimed film adaptation starring Jonatha Pryce and Anthony Hopkins was called ‘The Two Popes’, and the play has adopted the name as James Dacre’s production makes its London premiere. Anton Lesser and Nicholas Woodeson star as the two very different pontiffs.
