Not an extra for your dessert order, but a modest 320m-high mound with a distinctive half-cone summit and jagged cliff. Its pyramidal peak is reminiscent of a mini Matterhorn, but its gentler incline makes it much easier to conquer. In its day, the residence and formal gardens of Someries Castle were a grand affair, as befitted the home of a medieval magnate. The mansion was partly demolished in the 1700s, but the gatehouse remains – a testament to the craftsmanship of the labour force who built it. Although it might now look a little down at heel, the building was one of the first brick buildings erected in England – one of the reasons for its ancient monument status. As natural wonders go, there’s little to beat Wales’s highest mountain. There are six paths to the summit, though you’re in for a good seven-to-nine-mile walk there and back whichever one you take. If you want to take one trail up and another down, the Sherpa bus route runs around the mountain’s base and will get you back to where you started. There’s also a little steam engine that takes you to the top if you can’t make the walk. Puffing its way along a narrow rail with steep drops and stunning views on both sides, it’s quite an experience in itself.
