Highgate Cemetery

As befits a final resting place, Highgate Cemetery exudes tranquillity. With over 53,000 graves, split across its East and West sides, the cemetery features some of the finest funereal architecture, tombs and headstones in the country. Former locals buried here include author George Eliot, poet Christina Rossetti and punk impresario Malcolm McLaren, whose headstone bullishly proclaims: ‘Better a spectacular failure than a benign success’. But perhaps the most famous resident is Karl Marx, whose striking tomb still elicits salutes from comrades.
