Model Market

The makers of Street Feast are bringing their night-time street food party to an abandoned 1950s covered market in Lewisham, so now the foodies of south east London don't have to cross the river to tuck into delicious portable dinners from the likes of Breddos Tacos, Yum Bun and SmokeStak. Booze comes in all sorts of varieties, most notably alcoholic slushies and shandies served from an old hair salon. Find a spot among the outdoor and indoor eating spaces, or head up to the rooftop to catch the evening sun.

Really good atmosphere, friendly, lively crowd.

Food prices are way too dear though. £7 for a burger, £8 for two ribs (yes, they were large but still!)

We are in Lewisham, not Shorditch.

On the whole a really good, chilled evening.

Entertainment wise, Model Market is one of the best things to have happened to SE in the last few years.

Living in the area myself, there are very few (quality) options for a night out on weekends. Nice popup restaurants, brunch spots and bars are making their way South East but are still taking baby steps. You don’t have to go very far to find nice pubs, bars and places to grab a decent bite with Deptford and Brockley being just a stonethrow away, but Lewisham itself is seriously lacking nice cocktail bars, vibrant pubs, wine bars and nicer restaurants. This lack has partly been covered by Model Market; and I say partly because unfortunately it’s only open on Fridays and Saturdays.

I love Street Feast’s market but for me none of the others can compare to Model Market; the vibe and atmosphere here are unbeatable! It’s an amazing place where magic happens every weekend, sometimes turning into a dancefloor already before 9pm! Located in an old corner of Lewisham Shopping Centre, the setting is very original, with signs of old, now-closed shops (barber shops, grocery stores, travel agencies) still hanging over the bars and food stalls. I love the authenticity of that!

There are a lot of food options with flavours ranging from jerk chicken (Mama’s Jerk), melt-in-your-mouth beef (Up my Grill), dumplings (Gyoza Guys) to fried arepas, the favourite Venezuelan street food (Petare). To be honest the food has been exceptional the past two years with many more options for someone who doesn’t like fried food like me and the options this year, with so much fried food, have left me disappointed. I really miss Yum Bun and Smokestack, but even with fewer non-fried food options Model Market is still a great night out.

Winyl is a great option for good wine, while the market’s new gin bar serves excellent gins with quite a few tonic flavours to choose from. The central bar makes ace cocktails as well and you can get tipsy on the rooftop bar with classic tequila cocktails.

Even though the food disappointed me this year, Model Market is not about the food. It’s about good vibes, dancing, laughing, enjoying the atmosphere, sipping great drinks and having fun. For this, it deserved nothing less than 5 stars. If you haven’t made it South East yet, Model Market is one of the best reasons to do so to have a wonderful time!

On a final note: it’s always sunny in Lewisham ;-)

This is a gem of a place in SE London, however you pay WC1 prices. It's a similar venue to Brixton and Tooting markets, with a bit more character. There are seven or eight different bars, a burger joint, a gyoza magician (they really are fantastic), and flaming oil drums around to keep the atmosphere warm. Just off the roundabout and a 5 minute walk away from Lewisham station.

My fave of the whole SF franchise. The market is slightly off the beaten track which means a much more foodie crowd (rather than full of drinkers) which means loads of places to sit- yay!

The old shops and booths make for a Mad Max-esque atmosphere and its really fun to explore. As ever the range of stalls is impressive and even managed to find a decent range of options for my vegan friends visiting.

Upstairs there is a little bar area with beach style beds to lounge on. Great venue I highly recommend.

Nothing like it for miles around.

Some prices are a little high but there are still a lot of cheap beers and wine.
Never had a bad night, even in crappy weather.

A great (albeit pricey) night out in South London. Great selection of food, sweets and drinks stalls and live vinyl spinning DJs courtesy of the Winyl Bar. Let's hope it gets becomes a permanent year round feature like it's sister locations Dinerama and Hawker House.

When I first heard about Street Feast opening a place in Lewisham, I was both excited and apprehensive. Making use of a derelict old indoor/outdoor market just off the high street, the place is a stones throw from where I live. I have to say through, my reservations were squashed after my first visit last year. The atmosphere at this place is amazing. I have been a dozen times over summer and come rain or shine I always manage to have a great time. The variety of food is second to none and the quality of the ingredient sourced warrants the price you pay.

The mini naan slider selection from Rola Wala is a real favourite of mine, along with a MASSIVE rum cocktail served in a giant pineapple. Super chilled vibes from the vinyl DJ's and fire pits to keep you warm when the temperature drops. What more could you want from a night out in Lewisham?!

Lewisham's best kept secret is an lively food and drink street market where you can party on into the wee hours. Vendors offer good quality and the market itself has a buzz and a feel good vibe to it. There aren't enough places like this across London in general. It's a real boon for the South-East of London to have it.

Finally something to do on a Friday/Saturday night in Lewisham and it lives up to the expectations. The atmosphere is vibrant and friendly, the music is great and the food is sublime. If you are planning on eating then make sure you carry extra cash as it is not cheap. That's not to say its not worth the money, on the contrary, you really get what you pay for.

Staff are friendly and enjoy a chat, for summer 2015 there is also the inclusion of a rooftop bar well worth checking out. Highlight for me has to be the BAO (Taiwanese stand), it's become my summer addiction.
