Open Garden Squares Weekend 2013: National Trust's Carlyle’s House

Often described as the ‘first celebrity couple’, Thomas and Jane Carlyle had a tumultuous relationship which proved endlessly fascinating to fellow Victorians. The Scottish literary couple moved into their rented Old Chelsea home in 1834 and lived on Cheyne Row for nearly five decades, enjoying the home’s typical town garden surrounded by a high brick wall. The rectangular plot still features a gravel path along the borders, enchanting shaded corners, fruit trees and flower urns. Open Saturday only, 11am to 4.30pm. Open Sunday only, 10am to 5pm.
