Time Out says

This challenging swim pits participants agains the strength of the Thames as they swim a mile against the incoming tide near Chiswick Pier. The water temperature should be around 18 degrees centigrade but dry wetsuits are allowed to keep swimmers warm (and provide a little extra buoyancy). A 1,000m route is also available for those who would like a gentler option, or whose training didn't go to plan. The £15 entry fee includes a swimming hat and refreshments, and the race winners receive trophies. Email greatriverswim@blueyonder.co.uk for more details.
